John Hoffman Joins the Firm as a Managing Director of Specialty Tax Services

John P. Hoffman, CPA, MBA, has joined Miller Cooper’s Tax Department as a Managing Director of Specialty Tax Services.

His focus is maximizing tax incentives related to real estate and other fixed assets. In addition to cost segregation, he works on projects involving tax credits such as historic, renewable energy, low income housing, new markets, and research and development. He also assists with repairs and maintenance (tangible property) tax regulations, 179D and 45L energy efficient tax incentives, fixed asset valuation, property tax appeal and business incentives. In addition, he advises clients on project finance and transactional issues, helping manage the development process, manage risks throughout construction and financing, and provide guidance during acquisitions and dispositions.

Previously, Mr. Hoffman led the historic tax credit and cost segregation practices at a regional accounting firm and has more than 20 years of experience working on properties and portfolios ranging in value from under $1 million to over $1 billion for both privately held and public clients. He also spent several years focusing on real estate valuation and cost segregation including purchase price allocation and goodwill impairment for a professional service firm at the director level. After graduate school, Mr. Hoffman was a real estate development manager and focused on senior/multifamily housing, retail, hotels and indoor waterparks. He started his career in the valuation group at an international accounting firm.

Mr. Hoffman has an undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering, is a licensed CPA, hold a real estate broker’s license and earned an MBA with a focus on Real Estate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is an active public speaker on topics related to real estate including tax issues as well as energy/sustainability trends and opportunities.
